EPAS1是一种涉及氧调控基因诱导的转录因子。EPAS1可与靶基因启动子的缺氧反应元件（HRE）内的核心DNA序列 5′-[AG]CGTG-3′ 结合。EPAS1可调节血管内皮生长因子（VEGF）的表达，其可能与血管和肺小管系统的发育有关。EPAS1也可能在形成血脑屏障的内皮细胞中发挥作用。EPAS1是Tie-2酪氨酸激酶表达的有效激活剂。该激活可能需要募集转录共激活剂，例如CREBPB和EP300。EPAS1与氧化还原调节蛋白APEX的相互作用可能能够激活CTAD。
